Best on-ear headphones under $100 compared

Investing in an aftermarket pair of headphones is a quick and easy solution to improve the music listening experience on a mobile music player, but plenty of people feel uncomfortable jamming a tiny ear bud deep into their ear canals. Of course, a tight seal and close proximity to the eardrums offer the potential for the highest-resolution sound quality, but earpad and full-size headphones are also suitable for acoustic isolation and don't require minute fit adjustments the way in-ear-canal headphones do.

Here we've listed a handful of our favorite on-ear headphones that constitute the ideal marriage of lightweight comfort, travel-friendly design, and rich sound. Best of all, their sub-$100 price cap means you won't have to pick up a second job to invest in a new pair.

Whether you're looking for a simple mobile headset to enjoy on the run or a foldable retro pair that will turn heads on the subway, you won't be disappointed with any of these.

Check out this list of the best on-ear headphones under $100.

Skullcandy Roc Nation Aviator headphones review: Jay-Z-approved

Skullcandy continues to pursue its youthful listening-device niche with the Aviator headphones, a collaborative effort with Roc Nation, a music publishing and entertainment company founded by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET)

The Roc Nation Aviators are the first set of headphones we've seen from Skullcandy with a subtle aesthetic--the rest of the company's offerings redefine the meaning of words like "bulky" and "overbuilt," but the Aviators bring an elegant flavor to the product lineup with three color choices (Black, Brown Gold, and White) that feature a pliable leather headband and light branding on the silver connection points and inside the earcups as well.

At $150, the Roc Nation Aviator headphones are among the priciest cans Skullcandy offers, and while it's true that you can spend less on a basic over-ear model, their attractive retro design, in-line remote control/microphone, and impressive sound quality earn an overall CNET score of 7.3 (3.5 stars) and our recommendation to anyone shopping for a new set of headphones.
