WATCH: The Most Embarassing Lamborghini Crash Ever

If you happen to find yourself stopped at a red light behind a Lamborghini Gallardo, its driver revving his engine, get out your smartphone. Because you know something awesome is going to happen.

That’s what a group of friends in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling, Ill. was thinking, and they sure weren’t disappointed.

“He’s gonna fly,” one of the passengers predicted as they waited at the light. Sure, if by “fly” you mean “fly out of control”. The $225,000 car peeled out after the traffic light turned green and lost control while rounding the corner onto Wheeling Road, veering into oncoming traffic, where it came to rest wedged between two (laughably inferior) cars.

It’s a classic example of taking pleasure in someone else’s misery – in this case, someone far richer, and more pompous, than us average drivers. It’s no surprise that the video has garnered nearly seven million hits on YouTube in just four days.

The Gallardo’s driver, William Whitaker, told police he “just lost it” as he turned the corner. Whitaker was issued a citation for “failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.”

When CBS Chicago went to question Whitaker about the accident, reporter Brad Edwards asked him simply, “What happened?” Whitaker, speaking through the call box at his gated community in Hawthorn Woods, Ill., could only muster a long sigh before saying he expected a better question from the journalist.

Sure, he wrecked his expensive car. But the damage to his ego is probably priceless.

Lamborghini (Mostly) Confirms Aventador Roadster in Statement After EPA “Leak”

June 1, 2011 at 3:33pm by Justin Berkowitz

2011 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

With the EPA finally posting numbers for 2012-model-year cars, folks have begun scouring the listings for any hints about future models and powertrains. (This writer once, in a stroke of genius, used that very method to discover GM’s plans for the Pontiac G3 prior to any announcement that the “excitement” brand would be getting its very own Chevy Aveo.) A fuel-economy rating for the Lamborghini Aventador roadster is in the database, giving mostly reliable confirmation to the rather obvious speculation that Lambo would build a droptop version of its latest, greatest 12-cylinder monster.

There are instances, of course, when the EPA publishes fuel-economy estimates for cars that won’t necessarily exist or be sold in the U.S.—the 2006 Suzuki Swift x is just one example that still exists in the database—but considering that Lambo has offered decapitated versions of all of its models for the past two decades, an Aventador roadster is a sure thing. We spoke with Lamborghini, which supplied this statement essentially confirming that the car will at some point be built: “Naturally, an open-top version would bring an added dimension to the unique driving experience. Initially, however, we will focus on production of the hard-top Aventador.”

Bring it on! In the meantime, you can read our first drive of the newest V-12–powered Lambo right here.

2012 Lamborghini Aventador completes a mad trio of supercars headed to market:

The Lamborghini Aventador runs from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds.
The Lamborghini Aventador runs from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. By BOB GRITZINGER on 5/20/2011

If you thought the struggling global economy or high fuel prices might be hurting the world's supply of top-notch supercars, think again.

Since March, AutoWeek editors have taken the wheel of not one, not two, but three of the most insane superperformers on the planet: the McLaren MP4-12C, the Ferrari FF, and most recently, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4.

We see a few common threads: lots of lightweight aluminum and carbon-fiber materials, engines punching out more than 590 hp, automated-manual gearboxes, and prices that put them up against the average price of a three-bedroom home in most markets. In fact, the least expensive model on the block is the McLaren, with a base price checking in at a mere $231,000.

We're also seeing surprising refinement and driveability, as though supercar makers have finally come to realize that many of these cars spend more time preening along Rodeo Drive than running laps at Laguna Seca.

We're focusing our attention this week (and in the May 30 print and iPad editions of AutoWeek) on the latest of the breed, the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador. This is a car that we confidently named our Best in Show at the Geneva motor show in March, and now that we've driven it, our faith has been rewarded.

As the replacement for the Murci?lago supercar, the Aventador is as important to Lamborghini as the original Countach. But it's safe to say the Aventador--with its lightweight carbon monocoque and all-new 6.5-liter, 691-hp, 509-lb-ft V12 engine--is up to the challenge.

Though we never got a chance to test the car on public highways on a recent drive in Italy, we did log dozens of laps on the Vallelunga racetrack near Rome, running the car through its paces in each of its modes: strada, sport and corsa, the latter two in automatic and manual modes.

From the instant you flip up the red ignition-button cover and punch the Aventador's 12 raucous cylinders to life, you know you're in the cockpit of a special machine. In a car that runs to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, warp speed comes quickly, and the jump to hyperspace is only a punch of the accelerator away. At the same time, with brakes capable of slowing down from 62 mph in just 98 feet, the car seems much more under control than its wild-child pedigree might suggest. Braking was so spectacular that under hard braking, it was possible to feel minor pavement imperfections through the chassis.

We were particularly impressed with the car's intense grip and tractability, no doubt a function of sticky rubber, unseen stability and traction controls, and all-wheel-drive that instantly directs power to the wheels in the best position to push or pull the Lamborghini Aventador through a corner in the fastest possible manner.

It all comes together to make a car that quickly becomes second nature to drive hard and push to the limit, with spot-on steering, stunning handling and a far more civilized, functional and livable cockpit than we've ever seen in a Lamborghini.

The $387,000 supercar is sold out for the first 18 months of production, with initial deliveries starting late this summer. Lamborghini says it can build 750 cars per year for as long as there is demand.

Between the beatification of Pope John Paul II and Italy's celebration of the 150th anniversary of the country's unification, a lesser car might have been lost in the all of the hoopla. Instead, at least for car enthusiasts, the Lamborghini Aventador put everything else in the background.

2011 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 – First Drive Review

May 3, 2011 at 2:16pm by Juergen Zoellter

Lamborghini’s latest supercar is both tamer and wilder than ever.

If you happened to be in Rome at the end of April, you might have been planning to hear Pope Benedict XVI deliver his traditional Easter blessing. Finding yourself in a parade of Italian supercars guided by mayor Gianni Alemanno might have been unexpected for foreigners, but is little surprise in Italy. Here, the people are as proud of their sports-car tradition as they are to be home to the Pope. No wonder, then, that Lamborghini chose Rome, the Holy City, as the site of the first drives of its new Aventador LP700-4.

Lamborghini Cries Havoc, Lets Slip the Video of Aventador

April 28, 2011 at 2:16pm by Davey G. Johnson

To keep the masses gasping between the Aventador’s March debut and its first deliveries in August, the Lamborghinis have offered up some video of a pair of LP700-4s gallivanting about the Italian countryside. Well, gallivanting some of the time. At other points, the red and white Italianate superdupercars are fairly tear-assing it for the cameras, rudely slashing through the majestic score with a twelve-cylinder Sant’Agata Stihl. Then again, Lamboghini’s very existence is predicated upon appealing to the baser instincts of the hoity-toits, so perhaps we’re not so far off the mark with the chainsaw reference. Dude from Jackyl probably wants one bad.

2011 Lamborghini Gallardo Bicolore LP550-2 and 2012 Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante – First Drive Review

April 29, 2011 at 10:59am by Aaron Robinson

2011 Lamborghini Gallardo Bicolore LP550-2

A couple of paint-and-tape jobs stretch the Gallardo lineup.

In the seven years since our first Lamborghini Gallardo test, the factory has produced some 10,000 copies. Compared with, say, a Honda Accord—about 6000 sold last week—that number is paltry enough to qualify each Gallardo as special.
