The (YouTube) Hits Keep Coming: OK Go Teams With Chevy for New Video

It must be exhausting to be OK Go. The band set the bar extremely high for themselves (and eventually everyone) with their single “A Million Ways” and its accompanying video, which featured endearingly dorky, high-energy choreography. They kept building buzz with their next video for the song “Here It Goes Again,” which once again featured synchronized dance moves, this time on treadmills. The video went everywhere due to the low-budget and endlessly novel nature of the video. The success of that single firmly established the band as Internet darlings and each successive video confirms that status.

In their latest video, for the song “Needing/Getting,” OK Go is featured in what amounts to an extended commercial for Chevrolet. In the ad, the band turns the entire Chevy Sonic car into an instrument. As the car weaves its way through an obstacle course, it hits piano keys and blue plastic tubs. The band members add to those notes with thumps on the doors and knocks on the windows, while recording equipment captures it all. The result is a mesmerizing car commercial — and an all-around great music video — which in and of itself is pretty innovative.

So Here’s a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Drifting Around Two C63 AMG Sedans [VIDEO]

July 27, 2011 at 4:02pm by Alexander Stoklosa

Mercedes-Benz asked its fans on Facebook to vote for which vehicular stunt they felt Benz’s latest commercial should feature, and the fans picked a drifting figure-eight. What, no R-class jumping through a flaming hoop while pulling off a triple-axel? Not very imaginative, these Merc fans. Still, Mercedes answered the fans’ call and produced the video below, in which a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe executes its maneuvers around two stationary C63 sedans. Enjoy.

Hot Wheels and Tanner Foust Launch Truck 332 Feet From Giant Toy Track at Indy 500 [VIDEO]

May 31, 2011 at 12:16pm by Alexander Stoklosa

As if the Greatest Spectacle in Racing needed more spectacle, toy-car maker Hot Wheels decided to toss in a giant ramp and a stadium truck. The idea was to capture a new world record for four-wheeled vehicle distance jump, and the whole thing took place as part of the Indianapolis 500‘s pre-race festivities. For added flair, the attempt was made using a larger-than-life section of orange Hot Wheels track hanging from the top of an equally humongous door; together, they rose 100 feet above the raceway’s infield. Adding to the anticipation of the jump, Hot Wheels kept the identity of the driver a secret, referring to him only as the “Yellow Driver,” and one of four drivers for “Team Hot Wheels.” The team drivers—the others are Green, Red, and Blue; we think they might be moonlighting from Power Ranger gigs—strive to accomplish outrageous drift, Moto X, and rally-based feats that fans can watch in short webisodes on the Team Hot Wheels site.

The Indy jump went off without a hitch this past Sunday, and the Yellow Driver—later outed as American Top Gear host and rally pilot Tanner Foust—and his stadium truck sailed 332 feet for a new world record. The Hot Wheels crew didn’t simply put a truck on a huge ramp and cross their fingers, though. Foust put in three months of practice before the public stunt, and as one can imagine, the jump is a bit more complicated than driving flat out down a ramp. The truck’s transition onto the steep ramp can make its rear wheels go very light, and in a worst case scenario could send the thing nosediving into the ground. Furthermore, Foust actually doesn’t hit full throttle until the bottom of the ramp, at which point the truck “bottoms out” and larger contact patches provide a big uptick in grip; the focus during the 100-foot trip down the ramp is on keeping the rig pointed straight. The ramp is just 40 feet wide, and after leveling out, Foust has just 90 feet to accelerate to more than 100 mph before hitting a 16-ft kick-up. During the trick, he was in the air for four seconds.

In all, the jump was a well-executed childhood fantasy brought to life, and you can check out the video of the record-breaking stunt below.

Just Release It Already! BMW Previews Its Next M5 in Video of High-Speed Track Testing

June 1, 2011 at 4:16pm by Alexander Stoklosa

While BMW has already shown us its upcoming M5 über sedan in “concept” form at this year’s Shanghai auto show, the automaker continues to tease us with videos of prototype vehicles in various stages of development. Earlier vids included a 30-minute smorgasbord of M5 test mules romping in the Alps and a brief clip of an M5 roaring through a dark tunnel in a sort of polar-bear-blinking-in-a-snowstorm game, in which viewers could really only see the car’s lit headlights and, well, darkness. This new video, overlaid with a trance-inducing techno beat, shows a pair of M5s partaking in an afternoon of high-speed testing at the Nardo Ring in southern Italy. When we’re able to discern the cars’ exhaust notes, they sound about as good as you’d expect—they do, after all, pack 555-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8s, capable of revving to more than 7000 rpm.

The video clip also shows the M5 running at an indicated 308 km/h (that’s 191 mph!) in sixth gear, with the engine turning a few hundred rpm short of redline. The cars in the video are equipped with BMW’s seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, so given that the M5 was able to hit 191 mph with one more gear to go, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the super sedan top 200 mph (for details on the 2012 M5, including that 200-mph top speed, check out this article. Besides confirming that indeed, the M5 is a fast four-door, the video entertains with a BMW test driver drinking coffee at hyperspeed, and, of course, the sheer visual pleasure of viewing two M5 arcing around a high-speed oval. Watch the vid yourself below.

Lamborghini Cries Havoc, Lets Slip the Video of Aventador

April 28, 2011 at 2:16pm by Davey G. Johnson

To keep the masses gasping between the Aventador’s March debut and its first deliveries in August, the Lamborghinis have offered up some video of a pair of LP700-4s gallivanting about the Italian countryside. Well, gallivanting some of the time. At other points, the red and white Italianate superdupercars are fairly tear-assing it for the cameras, rudely slashing through the majestic score with a twelve-cylinder Sant’Agata Stihl. Then again, Lamboghini’s very existence is predicated upon appealing to the baser instincts of the hoity-toits, so perhaps we’re not so far off the mark with the chainsaw reference. Dude from Jackyl probably wants one bad.

Video: 27-liter, Rolls-Royce airplane-engined Rover SD1

by Aaron Richardson (RSS feed) on Apr 2nd 2011 at 8:01PM

1981 Rover SD-1

Charlie Broomfield got bored of working on run-of-the-mill project cars. He always seemed to finish them to quickly, and was never quite satisfied with the results. Charlie needed a challenge to his engineering and fabrication skills.

That challenge came in the form of a donated 1981 Rover SD-1. The SD-1 needed some serious help to be the luxury sport sedan it was when it left British Leyland during the Thatcher era. Instead of restoring the car from top to bottom, though, Charlie purchased a 27-liter Rolls-Royce Meteor engine from a British Spitfire fighter plane. The engine cost Charlie a slim £1,000.

With 600 horsepower and 1,500 pound-feet of Nazi-stopping gusto wedged between the frame rails, the SD-1 will now break 160 mph without going over 2,000 rpm. Almost none of the original Rover parts are left, save the body panels, and Charlie's goal is to crack 200 mph in the 24-cylinder beast before he considers the project done.
