It Comes From Garageland: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Ad Spot

June 1, 2011 at 8:58am by Davey G. Johnson

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to afford garage space at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Grand Prix course, you’re most likely unconcerned with the price of fuel. On the other hand, if you’re fortunate enough to afford garage space at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Grand Prix course, what’s a few bucks thrown at something with a bit more zazz than a Chevy Volt or a Fisker Karma? Something like BMW’s coming-in-’13 i8 plug-in sportster, perhaps?

To get those i8s into customers’ garages (eventually), the company has released a series of ads showing, yes, a series of garages. The spot references Berry Gordy, Steve Jobs, and presumably Thomas Edison—although his Menlo Park laboratory was not exactly a place to park a Patent Motorwagen. Then the action cuts to the i8’s concept-car precursor, the Vision EfficientDynamics, sounding for all the world like some turbine-powered machine like the Jaguar C-X75, rather than the three-cylinder diesel conveyance it actually is. Then there are pretty shots of the Lite-Brite Bimmer darting about Yas Marina’s nighttime Tronscape. So yes, to answer your question, the concept does move under its own power. And never mind that the first recorded electric light bulb actually switched on in 1809. Or, you know, that you can buy a Chevrolet Volt right now.
